Nova

Hear it read aloud Start over

Legend has it… every unicorn is born whole — fully awake, fully loved, and connected to everything alive. Some are cheered on so loudly that the feeling underneath becomes a whisper. High above the clouds, in a tower made of glass, a hive hums in a window box — and its door is very, very small.

1

Nova's family lives high above the clouds in Spire District, in a glass tower stacked with awards, blueprints, and three tutors' schedules pinned to her wall. From her window the whole city glitters like a circuit board. On the sill, a glass observation hive: bees pouring in and out of a single small door. Three clocks tick in three rooms, and none of them agree.

3

Her parents mean well — they shower her with lessons and gifts. At dinner, her father looks up from his tablet. "What did you build today?" Nova tells him. He nods, and looks back down. Later, on the garden level, her grandmother pats the bench beside her and says nothing at all — just hums a song from before the spires, no lesson in it anywhere, while the clouds go pink below them.

4

Letters swim and scatter whenever Nova tries to read them — no tutor could fix it, until her little horn-reader learned to sing the scrolls aloud. And underneath it all, a gift no schedule can teach: Nova sees exactly how any two ideas fit together, like puzzle pieces. A bridge and a birdsong — she sketches the bridge's cables as a staff, and the birds land on it as notes. "Every idea fits somewhere," she says. "Especially the weird ones."

5

After a long day of lessons, Nova sneaks up to a locked, dusty room at the top of the spire — the one her family always says is "not ready yet." She slides a hairpin into the old lock, wiggles it, listens. Click. The door swings open on darkness that smells of dust and the air before rain.

6

Inside: an empty room split into three glowing chambers, and a small brass plaque that reads Mysterious Intelligence. When Nova steps over the threshold, all three chambers brighten — just slightly — the way a face does when it recognizes you. She freezes. The glow holds. She takes another step. It brightens again.

7

A dusty scroll explains: the Mysterious Intelligence finds unicorns with a spark of an idea and gives them three things — a coach, a little seed-hay of Venture Capital, and a key to a shared Lab — a room for building, testing, and breaking things safely, together. Nova reads it with the horn-reader singing. Then again. Then sits down hard on the dusty floor. "For unicorns like me," she says. Then, slower: "For unicorns NOT like me." The chambers glow.

8

Nova invites two neighbor young unicorns — young unicorns who've never had tutors or labs of their own — to build with her. Before they start, she makes them stand in a circle and say three things with her, feeling silly: Will this help us? Will this help others? Will this help the world? Then they wire up a jellyfish lamp that glows all on its own. Try four sparks. Try seven smells like toast. On try nine the lamp breathes light, soft and blue, and they cheer so loud a tutor pounds up the stairs — and stops in the doorway — and stays.

9

More young unicorns gather outside her door every day — curious, talented, and with no family able to afford tutors, tools, or rooms that are "not ready yet." Nova learns their names, then their ideas, then the way each one says what if. She starts a waiting list on the back of a schedule. By Friday it runs onto a second sheet. She lies awake staring at the ceiling with the list in her hoof.

10

Nova asks the Mysterious Intelligence for something bigger: Lab chambers not just for Spire District young unicorns with fancy families, but for any unicorn with an idea, anywhere in the city. She practices the speech in the mirror eleven times. In the glowing room, it all leaves her. She just holds up the waiting list, both sheets, and says: "The ideas are already everywhere. Only the doors are missing."

11

The Mysterious Intelligence agrees. Open Labs rise in every district — each with a coach, seed-hay, and tools like Nova's, free for any unicorn brave enough to knock. And for those who'd rather not knock at all, the door simply stays open, and nobody calls after them. On opening day, Nova works her way to the very back of the crowd, and watches a young unicorn from the docks walk through a Lab door for the first time — stop — and put a hoof over her mouth.

12

But the tower's own Lab door — the first one, the one at the top of the spire — has one lock, and one key, and the key is Nova's. On the coldest morning of the year she oversleeps. When she runs up the stairs, forty young unicorns are sitting on the cold steps outside the locked door, some for hours, and the young unicorn from the docks is at the very bottom with her idea drawn on a paper bag, and she does not look up when Nova passes. On the sill inside, the bees are piling up at their one small door, waiting to get out. And at the very bottom of the stairs, the Mysterious Intelligence has left its room — the three chambers' glow has come all the way down the spiral, soft, and settled on the step beside the young unicorn from the docks, warm on her cold hooves, and it stays there, with the last one in line, and does not go back up.

13

Nova doesn't open the door. The glow on the bottom step slides across the floor to the far wall and pools there — on an old hatch she's never noticed, under the stairs, its edges lit — and holds. Nova opens it. Stairs, going down. She walks down, and down, past the garden level, into a crystal cavern beneath the city — the Geode Hollow — where the first light breaks into star-patterns that pulse slowly across the walls. Slow in… pause… long out. Patterns. Nova reads them faster than anyone alive could: The sea is never in a hurry. Forty young unicorns on the cold steps above. The lights pulsing slow on the walls. Does Nova breathe with the cave — or run back up and unlock the door first?

14

She breathes with the cave. Three slow waves. Her racing mind goes still as glass — and in the stillness, for a few heartbeats, she sees down both roads at once, and in both of them the hive on the sill has no door at all, just open air. The Labs are open and the young unicorns keep coming. What should Nova's own life become?
